Will Botox Make Me Look Weird? & The 5 Other Most Common Anxieties Around Having Botox

Discover whether Boxox will make you look weird and uncover the truth behind five common anxieties surrounding Botox. Gain insights and reassurance in this informative blog that addresses your concerns and helps you make an informed decision about your treatment choices.

When it comes to Botox, research shows that we spend a huge amount of time thinking about having it before actually taking the plunge.

Having spent many years doing this procedure now, I have a really good understanding of what those anxieties are, as although they may be packaged slightly differently, there are themes common to most of us.

  1. Fear of being judged. This is above and beyond one of the most common fears and anxieties around non surgical and surgical procedures. Whether it’s what your partner thinks, to what your mum would say or the comments your friends make. Maybe it’s even you. Have you ever been guilty of the ‘I would never do …….’ phrase…yup.. I learned to stop saying that one a long time ago!! Bottom line is – more people are doing this without telling anyone and frankly and more importantly, it’s nobody’s business but yours! If you feel comfortable discussing this with your friends and family – then all power to you. If you prefer to keep it as your little secret – that’s OK too – just do you!
  2. Fear of the procedure itself. It’s really ‘normal’ to feel a level of apprehension – like the first time you do anything, this feeling is unlikely to go completely until you do it. As long as the nerves and apprehension are mixed in with a level of anticipation and excitement, then you are good. With regards to the ‘pain’ felt, the most common phrase I hear after a first time Botox treatment is ‘oh – was that it?!’
  3. Fear of looking ‘weird’. Whether it’s a fear of looking frozen, startled, expressionless or fake, this is a real fear that I talk about with clients over and over again. Here’s what I have to say on this. In order to look fake (or any of those other phrases) you need to have a lot of different treatments given in large doses, frequently. That’s it. A conservative Botox treatment will categorically not make you look ‘done.’

  1. Fear of ‘addiction’. Getting addicted to Botox is not a thing. What will happen is that you may enjoy the results so much that you want to keep up with it. That’s really no different to any other personal grooming activity you engage in. Having Botox is not a ‘one off’ thing. You can choose to have treatment in the build up to a special event. If you are considering this as an addition to your age management plan, then you really should factor in that you will need to have treatment every 3- 6 months, so that’s the reality of the commitment you are entering into if you wish to pursue.
  2. Fear of cost. When you do your research you will find a huge variation in cost of treatment. This is dependent on where you are and who is doing the treatment. My advice on this, is to aim for a mid range priced clinic for your locality. The very cheap options should ring alarm bells. The very expensive are a bit of you, if you like the kudos of visiting someone in the public eye. Many clinics now offer the option of monthly payment plans which can help to manage the cost by spreading it out throughout the year.
  3. Fear of knowing how to choose somewhere. The socials are awash with ads for all kinds of clinics and all kinds of practitioners offering aesthetics services. It is quite literally, a minefield – so how do you choose? You could ask your friends – like minded people often like going to similar places. If you prefer not to ask or think you don’t know anyone having treatment, then I would suggest that you take a look at the Save Face website. This database only lists clinics that have met a certain safety standard criteria. The clinics listed here have opted to pay money to be listed and to undergo regular inspections to ensure that they are offering credible services with all the correct procedures and protocols in place. So ultimately you know that the clinic you are visiting is run by medical professionals, is safe and has integrity.
