5 Tips For Boosting Your Self-Confidence During Menopause

The menopause is an unavoidable part of life for every woman, but there are many ways to boost your self confidence during what can be a difficult time.

Menopause is an unavoidable part of life for every woman. It’s a natural transition that marks the end of the reproductive years and is preceded by perimenopause – a time of hormone fluctuations that can last for up to 8 years from a woman’s mid 40s into her early 50s.

The menopause and perimenopause bring with it a plethora of physical and emotional symptoms, including hot flushes, mood swings, skin problems, weight gain, and decreased self-confidence. As universal as the menopause is among women, there’s no getting away from how difficult and traumatic it can be, and this isn’t made any easier by the fact that the menopause isn’t as widely talked about as it should be.

Menopause can affect a woman’s self-esteem and make them feel less attractive, less energetic, and less productive. If you’re experiencing these symptoms, know that you’re not alone. In this article, I will provide you with five simple tips for boosting your self-confidence during menopause.

Self-care

Menopause can be a very challenging time, and it’s crucial to take care of your physical and emotional well-being at home as well as at work. Practice self-care by indulging in activities that make you happy, fulfilled, and relaxed. You can take a long, relaxing bath, read a good book or listen to soothing music – whatever helps you connect most with your inmost self. By doing what you enjoy and setting time for yourself away from your responsibilities every day, you’ll be able to relieve some of the stress that comes with menopause.

Exercise Regularly

Most women find it more difficult to keep weight off during the menopause, and so regular exercise is essential for maintaining a healthy weight, improving physical health, and decreasing the frequency of hot flushes. Additionally, exercise releases mood boosting endorphins, also known as the “happy hormone,” which helps to elevate your mood and stave off the depression that sometimes comes with the menopause.

Whether you go for a walk, swim, or join a fitness class, include regular exercise into your daily routine if you can. Be aware that in your 40s a lot of the high impact cardio exercises that are popular among younger people may not be good for your joints. If you lift weights, enjoy running, and do a lot of cardio, a good pair of trainers and joint supports are a good investment, and you may find you get equal benefit in your 40s from core and strengthening exercises, such as Pilates and yoga.

Dress For Success

Women can look and feel good at any age. The key is to invest in clothes that make you feel great and that suit your body shape. Dressing for success may involve changing or adjusting your style from what you used to wear, but when you look good, you will feel good, too. You are perfect as you are at whatever age you are, so don’t feel the need to dress or act a certain way to look or feel ‘younger’. Wear clothes that fit well, flatter your figure, and are comfortable. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different styles and colours until you find what makes you feel confident and beautiful.

Surround Yourself With Supportive People

During menopause, it’s essential to have a positive support system around you. Surround yourself with family, friends, and colleagues who uplift you and support you through this transition, allowing you to be yourself without having to mask or soldier through. Reach out to friends and family and talk about how you feel openly, and ask for their support. If you enjoy social contact, join a local menopause support group or Meetup to connect with other women who are going through the same experience, and your 40s is also a great time to take up a new hobby, giving you the opportunity to step outside your day-to-day commitments and make new friends.

Age-optimised Skincare

As women (and men) age, skin collagen production decreases, causing wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin. The menopause itself can cause additional skin changes, such as dryness, hyperpigmentation, and acne. A good skincare regime and a healthy balanced diet will go a long way to helping your skin look and feel healthy throughout your life, and there are also a range of anti-ageing and healthcare treatments available to help boost your self-esteem.

There are a wide range of skincare products available to give you a short-term appearance boost and help you feel good about your skin. However, during menopause we recommend looking for skincare products and treatments to get the best long-term results and value for money. Why?  Because medical skin care products include more effective active ingredients which can, for instance, help stimulate natural collagen growth to improve the texture and ‘fullness’ of your skin, or combat dryness. Medical products also blend these active ingredients in a way that when they reach your skin, they will stimulate your skin cells to work more efficiently.

In addition to over-the-counter products, cosmetic medical skincare treatments can help boost your self-confidence even more and make you feel rejuvenated, going beyond what you can achieve with topical creams and lotions, and delivering deeper and more noticeable results. From chemical peels and skin boosters to PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) treatment and wrinkle reduction injections, there are various clinical treatments available to suit different skin types and concerns. For instance, chemical peels are perfect for getting rid of dead skin cells, promoting cell turnover, and treating acne. On the other hand, wrinkle reduction injections are great for smoothing out wrinkles and fine lines. Don’t hesitate to book a session with a skincare specialist to discuss your options.
