Menopause has never had such air time. Since the documentary by Davina McCall, I have had so many discussions with my clients and friends alike about how menopause affects them.

It feels so liberating to be able to discuss something which has really been quite taboo. With 50 being the new 40 many of us do feel and behave ‘younger’ than the generations that went before us and yet with that comes the reluctance to discuss something that highlights the very fact that we are indeed ageing.

For many women, alongside all of the other nuances of menopause, it is commonly noted that changes in the skin and hair are apparent.

Oestrogen has a big effect on the skin.

Thickness of the skin diminishes when oestrogen levels are low – this is well demonstrated by studies carried out throughout the menstrual cycle. This is not your imagination! The lack of oestrogen accelerates age-related skin deterioration, which results in thinner skin, an increase in number and depth of wrinkles, increased skin dryness, and decreased skin firmness and elasticity. I would love to say this is not true but sadly it is. Your skin health literally deteriorates as a direct result of menopause.

There are a spectrum of effects resulting from menopause but my focus here today is skin. So what can be done to counter this ageing skin problem? HRT as highlighted by Ms McCall and her team has many benefits and skin health is one of them. If you are menopausal and have the symptoms then a chat with your GP would be a good place to start a discussion around your suitability for HRT.
