The term ‘Vampire Facial’ refers to an innovative clinical cosmetic procedure that has gained popularity in recent years to treat a range of dermatological and hair loss issues, combining micro-needling with PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) treatment. The vampire facial concept was developed by Dr Barbara Sturm, the founder of skincare company Molecular Cosmetics, to address her own issues with sensitive skin in 2003, and was subsequently expanded into a range of skincare products and treatments. Vampire facials have received celebrity endorsements and recognition from Kim Kardashian-West, among others, who have publicly shared their experiences with the treatment.

How the vampire facial works

At its core, the vampire facial is a method for rejuvenating the skin using your own blood. The procedure begins with taking a small blood sample your arm, which is then processed in a centrifuge to separate the golden  platelet-rich plasma from the red cells, and create your own personalised PRP solution.

While this is being done, the skin is prepared for your micro-needling treatment using a strong numbing cream to maximise your comfort. Micro-needling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is not as scary as it sounds, and is in reality a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure in which tiny punctures. This can be done in a variety of ways and is tailored to maximise your results.

During your treatment session, one of our highly skilled nurses will gently move the chosen device across the targeted area of your skin. The tiny punctures will stimulate your body’s natural healing response, leading to increased collagen and elastin production in the days and weeks following treatment, all a part of the PRP process. Throughout this process, your growth factor -rich plasma is being delivered just under the top  layers of the skin. A small amount will also be reserved to massage into the skin directly following treatment.

The combined micro-needling and PRP method used in the vampire facial has yielded successful results in treating various skin conditions, including facial acne scars, wrinkles, fine lines, hyperpigmentation, and uneven skin tone. The treatment can also be performed on different parts of the body, including the neck, chest, arms, and hands, anywhere there is skin! PRP is also highly effective in the stimulation of hair growth.

Is the vampire facial safe?

The vampire Facial is the name the press have chosen to describe PRP. Whilst this is a headline grabber, it can also sound a bit trivial.

This treatment is Platelet Rich Plasma, it is a medical procedure that has many uses above and beyond treating the skin. All PRP is not equal however. The skill of the practitioner and the quality of the centrifuge (the machine used to separate out the components of your blood). Our Experienced nurses are highly skilled at all procedures involving needles. The centrifuge system used at LPA to separate your blood is the leading system. This combination makes LPA PRP treatments best in class.

The treatment itself may cause some temporary redness and very mild swelling. Other than that, the risks associated with this treatment are next to nothing. That is purely because this is an entirely natural treatment, nothing else is used other than your own body components.

After-care instructions should be followed to promote optimal healing and minimise any potential health risks, and our patients are delighted with the positive benefits to skin elasticity and radiance (or hair thickness) following treatment.
