Juvederm Ultra

Posted on 3 December, 2010

Juvederm Ultra is the dermal filler of choice at LPA. As we age, our skin changes in its appearance. This process usually starts in our thirties and is predetermined to a large extent by our genes. Visible signs or aging may be accelerated by external factors such as spending long periods of time in the sun. UV rays not only result in skin pigment changes as most of us know but can also increase the speed at which we breakdown our natural elastin and collagen in the deeper layer of our skin and will therefore result in deeper lines and ‘looser’ skin. Usually we lose volume from our face; this often starts with the cheeks, making our cheeks appear flatter. Our skin also becomes saggier which creates folds we didn’t have in our youth – for example lines that run from the outside nostrils to the corners of the moth and lines that run from the corners of the mouth towards the chin. Our lips can lose the definition they once had and can start to appear thinner. The general appearance of the skin is drier due to hormonal changes and depletion of Hyaluronic acid, rougher due to reduced rates of natural skin renewal and uneven due to areas of pigmentation. Juvederm Ultra can be used to add volume back and to smooth out those deep static creases.

Juvederm Ultra is made from Hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is found naturally in your skin, it is a type of poly saccharide and it binds with water which explains its role in keeping the skin looking young. As we age, the amount of natural Hyaluronic also diminishes. The makers of Juvederm Ultra are able to manufacture the substance from a non animal source using bacteria. The HA in Juvederm Ultra presents in a smooth gel and is combined with lidocaine which is an anaesthetic, this means that injections are relatively pain free and its smoothness enhances a natural look. One of the many benefits of using HA fillers is that as compared with collagen the effects last longer, the effect can last up to 12 months (less so for the lips). Juvederm Ultra comes in different ‘strengths’ enabling it to be even more versatile as different strengths are suitable for different areas of the face. In general, Juvederm Ultra 2 is used for the upper face and around the lips for moderate superficial lines. Juvederm Ultra 3 is used for the lines between the nose and mouth (nasolabials), the corners of the mouth and to volumise the lips. Juvederm Ultra 4 is used for deeper lines including the nasolabials and maybe used for re volumising the cheeks.  Fillers can be used for men and women alike and as with other aesthetic treatments, friends and family usually notice that you look better but are unable to identify why.

The pricing for fillers can sometimes appear to be a bit vague or in some cases even misleading. This is partly because it really does depend on the individual as to which product will acheive the best result and what quantity. Also if treating several different areas of the face then several different products may be recommended. At LPA you can disuss your budget openly as well as your goals in order to try and acheive a realistic plan which will get you the best value for your money.  Check out the Juvederm Ultra website for information on the products and to see the approved clinic lisitings for LPA.
