Do Lip Fillers Hurt?

Posted on 4 January, 2020

Do Lip Fillers Hurt and other Frequently asked Questions about Lip Enhancement.

We are accelerating towards the party season – no denying it, so there is just enough time to get that treatment booked in and ensure you are looking on party point. Lip treatments here at LPA involve the use of the Juvéderm range – Juvéderm Smile, Juvéderm Volbella or Juvéderm Volift. So to help you with everything you ever wanted to know I have put together my frequently asked Lip Filler Questions.

1) Do Lip fillers hurt?

As with all fillers, here at LPA we start with applying a numbing cream to desensitise the surface of the skin. In addition to this, the filler itself is pre mixed with lidocaine which is a numbing agent. All of this helps to reduce the discomfort of the treatment. That being said, the lips are sensitive and the treatment involves the use of a very fine needle. Will you feel it ? Yes. Will you be able to tolerate it? Absolutely yes!

2) What are Lip Fillers?

As mentioned in the previous question, we use the Juvéderm range of dermal fillers, why? We use Juvéderm because, within the industry Juvéderm is considered to be the ‘gold standard’. This well researched, long established, super safe luxury treatment has a temporary result. This means that in order to maintain the effect you do need to repeat the treatments, on the flip side this means that the treatment is ultra safe – hyaluronic acid fillers naturally metabolise out of the body over a period of time.

3) What is the best Lip Filler?

As mentioned above, here at LPA we choose to work with the best brand in class -  Juvederm. Within the range there are a couple of options to choose form depending on the result you are looking for. This is best discussed with your practitioner who will offer guidance on which product to select.

4) What are the side effects of Lip Enhancement?

Typical side effects include swelling. The lips do swell – this may be to a lesser or greater degree. Partly dependent on the product used and partly dependent on your tendency to swell. Plan your lip treatment when you have a quiet couple of days – that way any swelling will be a minor inconvenience and not an unexpected embarrassment.

5) How much Lip Filler should I have?

The typical treatment at LPA is 1ml. That being said, the range is anything between 0.5 – 2ml. For many 0.5ml may well be too subtle once the swelling has settled. For some, 0.5ml can be a gentle introduction to the benefits of lip filler, for those who start with a fuller natural lip, 0.5ml may just be enough to take you where you want to go. Those who are looking to build volume will need several treatments. Anything over 1ml is divided into separate treatment sessions. Staging larger lip volume protects against overstretching tissue and creating potential complications.

6) Will I get a trout pout?

This is a big FAT no. Here at LPA we are not advocates of the trout pout. It is not hard to see examples of bad lip augmentation unfortunately. Achieving a good looking lip result requires the use of an established product, administered by a qualified professional.

7) How many injections are needed?

This is a question I typically get asked when I am hovering over my client, needle in hand, about to start a lip treatment. The number of injections depend on the amount of product being used and the technique employed. But the main message relating to this question is that, the super strong numbing cream, combined with the anaesthetic within the filler, will leave you oblivious to the number of injections as you will not feel them all to count. Take deep breaths and rest assured that the pre treatment discussion takes longer than the treatment itself!

8) Love island Lips ?

The idea that "Lip fillers are for young female 'Love Island Wannabees'" is untrue from start to finish. Although the younger generation are more likely to go for a fuller lip result, they are certainly not the only group to benefit from the rejuvenating effects of lip treatments. Suitable for both men and women alike, this treatment can be administered to suit your features, your face, your gender, your age. My oldest lip filler client is in her mid seventies and had never had any injectables prior to starting this last year.

9) How long do lip injections last?

This is dependent on the product used. Juvederm Smile will last on average around 6 months, whilst Volbella and Volift will last 12 months.

So there you have it - my most frequently asked questions regarding lip fillers. If there is something I have missed, please do get in touch and I can answer your particular question.
