What stops men from seeking aesthetic treatments?

‘This month we have been focusing on men.

I have been wondering why it is that we see significantly less male than female clients.

Some recent research that had been done in Canada by a group of dermatologists found that, in an initial consultation, the main barrier that men identified, for not seeking aesthetic treatments, was the fear of feminization. So, in other words, the fear of looking more feminine at the end of a treatment.

Now,  this is controversial, but I dispute these results. Okay, so my research, which,  has been a little bit less formal, more of a ‘field’ based interview approach. When I say ‘field’, I mean ‘pub’ and when I say’ interview’ I mean a chat. Okay, so this is my theory.

So, it is my belief that two of the main barriers against men getting treatments are as follows:

1) Before reading you must understand that I do not want to offend any of you out there, but, to generalize –  men do not get treatments because they have not got a clue about what is out there.  They do not understand how it fits into their lives, what they could get out of it and  how it will help them.

Men if you are reading this then please understand this – a lot of the women that come in to see me do not have a clue. I will get women booking in for Botox when they really mean filler, vice versa, or people just coming in and saying, “Look, I don’t know what the solution is, but here’s the problem.”

So, men, there is nothing wrong with not knowing what the solution is and just coming in with the problem.

My job is to provide the solution to your problem.

2) My number two barrier for men is the fear of your mates finding out that you have had treatments.

I think, unfortunately, we do still live in quite a judgmental world. I have talked about this before, we have got the spectrum of the young ones who are  posting all over Instagram, and are really proud of the treatments that they have had done.

Then, you have got the more mature, I would say, more conservative group at the other end of the spectrum who would be mortified if anyone knew. So, I have lots of female clients  who really do not want people to know.  Some do not even tell their husbands or their partners.

So, it is a really normal thing for women, so I totally understand that, for men, this is magnified.

However, I think again, there is a lot of misunderstanding in terms of what you can achieve and why you might want to consider having these kind of treatments. So, for something like Botox, for example, this offers what I term as  ‘fresh factor’. I think this is not spoken about enough. This treatment is not aimed at trying to freeze the face, it is about just trying to soften expression with a view to giving you that fresh factor. So, your ideal treatment is not to walk out and for people to say, “Oh my God, what have you done?” But, for you to walk out,  and your mates to say, “You look well, you been away? What’s going on? You look relaxed, you look happy.” Those are the kind of things that we are after.

So gents, last word if you any of this resonates with you – get in touch and find out how we can help.’
