Summer Skincare: How Summer Weather Affects Your Skin (And How to Protect It)

Summer sunshine may feel great, but it places significant stress on your skin. Discover how UV radiation, heat, humidity, pollution, and lifestyle factors affect every layer of the skin—and learn the expert skincare strategies that help keep your complexion healthy, hydrated, and glowing all summer long.

Summer Skincare – How Summer is Tough on your Skin ☀️

Summer feels carefree – long days, warm nights, and plenty of time outdoors. But while you’re enjoying the sunshine, your summer skin is quietly fighting a battle on multiple fronts with a complex mix of stressors that challenge sensitive skin at the cellular and structural level. The summer months bring a complex matrix of intense UV radiation, soaring temperatures, and fluctuating humidity that challenge your skin deep beneath the surface regardless of skin type. Let’s look at the problems summer weather causes to the different layers of your skin, and why Summer can be called a full-body workout for your skin’s biology. 💪

Understanding the skin’s structure helps explain why summer is so demanding:

  • Epidermis – the outer layer of your skin that you can see and touch – takes the brunt of UV, heat, and pollution. Fun fact: the epidermis contains no blood vessels, and is entirely dependent on the dermis to supply it with oxygen and nutrients. The lower part of the epidermis creates millions of new skin cells (keratinocytes) that gradually move upwards as they mature in about 28 days. The outer layer of the epidermis is made entirely of dead skin cells that act as a tough, protective shield before naturally shedding away.
  • Dermis – the thicker, deeper layer directly beneath the epidermis. It contains tough connective tissue, collagen and elastin fibres that provide strength and flexibility, blood vessels, hair follicles, and sweat glands. The dermis is responsible for maintaining your skin’s firmness, elasticity and resilience.
  • Hypodermis (or Subcutaneous layer) – the deepest layer of the skin – contains mainly fat cells that insulate and cushion; works harder to regulate temperature.

UV rays: UVA and UVB

The biggest stressor of the summer season is the increased ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sun exposure. This radiation stages a two-front attack on your skin.

UVB radiation penetrates the top layer of the skin (the epidermis). It can damage skin cell DNA and is the primary cause of sunburns and most skin cancers.

UVA makes up about 95% of the UV radiation reaching the Earth. It penetrates deeper into the skin (the dermis) and is responsible for tanning and premature aging, such as wrinkles and loss of elasticity.

The Epidermis – the Surface Shield

Your outermost skin layer takes the brunt of the damage, where UV rays can directly damage the DNA inside your skin cells. When hit by UVB radiation, specialized cells at the bottom of the epidermis called melanocytes frantically produce melanin – the pigment responsible for skin color, to help protect itself from UV damage. This means that the glowing skin or  “healthy” summer tan many of us strive for, is actually a visible sign of cellular trauma.

The Dermis – The Structural Foundation

Beneath the surface lies the dermis, which houses the crucial structural proteins collagen and elastin. Summer is notoriously hard on this layer because longer-wavelength UVA rays penetrate deeply into the dermis to generate unstable molecules called free radicals. These molecules attack healthy skin cells and contribute to oxidative stress, damaging collagen and elastin fibres within the dermis.

Over time, this process can lead to:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Uneven skin tone including dark spots
  • Loss of firmness
  • Dullness

Antioxidant-rich skincare products containing ingredients such as vitamin C can help neutralise free radicals and support the skin’s natural defence systems. A skin care routine that is thoughtful and considered will not only consist of medical grade products but will switch up  between a summer skin care routine and one for winter.

Heat, Sweat, and the Congestion Trap

High summer temperatures increase blood flow to the skin and stimulate your sweat glands, forcing your dermis to work overtime to regulate your body’s temperature. While sweating is a natural and healthy cooling system, it causes significant problems for your complexion. When sweat mixes with excess oil (sebum), dead skin cells, sunscreen residue, and urban pollution, it creates a perfect storm for clogged pores and breakouts. Spending a full minute washing your face with a cleanser and using a scrub 3 times as week help combat these effects. The constant heat can also disrupt your skin’s delicate micro environment, causing friction and heat rash.

Humidity

Humidity softens the outer layer of the skin, making your skin more vulnerable to bacterial overgrowth, barrier disruption, dehydration and environmental pollutants. This is far from  the ultimate summer skin we picture in our minds. Humidity can also stimulate the skin to produce more oil increasing the risk of a blemish especially in acne-prone skin.

Summer Lifestyles

Living your best summer life introduces its own set of environmental stressors. Frequent dips in the pool expose your skin to chlorine, which strips away natural oils, while saltwater heavily dehydrates the epidermis. Wind and sand can even create micro-abrasions on the skin’s surface

In a city, summer brings a dangerous combination of high UV index and trapped urban pollution. The summer heat causes your pores to dilate, allowing microscopic particulate matter from smog and exhaust to penetrate your skin easily. This triggers an inflammatory response that depletes your skin’s natural antioxidant reserves and can exacerbate conditions like rosacea and acne.

Getting together the right summer skincare essentials for your environment is key.

The best summer skincare routine? – sunscreen, hydrate – and more summer skin care tips

Summer weather leaves a long-term impact by fundamentally changing how your skin cells function and age. Because summer damage happens at a deep, cellular level, a standard moisturizer is not enough. To protect your skin, you should upgrade to an active, clinical approach to acheive healthy summer skin:

  • Avoid the strongest UVA and UVB rays by staying out of the sun’s glare between 10AM – 4PM
  • Protect the skin by applying a broad-spectrum SPF cream every morning such as SPF 50 (and reapply it, for example every two hours) to shield your cells from both UVA (ageing) and UVB (burning) rays, even on cloudy days.
  • Drink water: Dehydrated and dry skin burns faster and heals more slowly. Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day.
  • Use topical antioxidants, like a Vitamin C serum, to neutralize the free radicals generated by the sun and city pollution before they can destroy your collagen.
  • Moisturise and hydrate – use lightweight hydration to support the epidermal barrier without clogging pores
  • Cleanse gently but deeply to remove the daily buildup of sweat, oil, and sunscreen
  • Moisturize: Apply a hydrating, aloe vera based, or after-sun lotion post-tanning to soothe and keep your skin nourished.
  • Exfoliate to remove dead skin cells from the surface of your skin and improve skin texture. This helps unclog pores, smooths texture, and allows your other skincare products to absorb more effectively improving thr look of skin. You can opt for either a physical grainy exfoliant or a chemical exfoliant like salicylic acid, or even better a combination product will give great results without stripping your skin.
  • Keeping the skin hydrated can feel challenging, Injectable treatments that lock in moisture such as Profhilo are ideal at this time of year. This hyaluronic acid treatment reaches the deeper layers of the skin to leave your skin feeling and looking super fresh. LED Phototherapy is also a fantastic summer treatment to quench thirsty skin by stimulating cells to behave more efficiently.

Protect your Skin

Summer may bring sunshine and glowing complexions, but it also exposes your skin cells to heat, UV radiation, dehydration, and environmental stress. Every layer of the skin – from the protective epidermis to the collagen-rich dermis – works hard to defend itself against these challenges.

Cleansing your skin thoroughly morning and evening removes impurities built up on the skin and helps to prevent clogged pores. SPF is a non-negotiable and these days there are many SPFs on the market so you will be able to find a product that provides protection without feeling heavy. If you are struggling with this persist and ask for help – this is a common summer skincare problem but even for senstive skin types – there is a product for you.

By understanding how your skin functions and adapting your skincare routine to the season, you can enjoy the warmer months all summer long while keeping your skin healthy, resilient, and radiant for years to come.
