Caterpillar or Butterfly?

They say that summer bodies are made in the winter; the same can also be said for summer skin. During the winter months our skin can be exposed to the extremes of both the outdoor chill factor but also the effects of artificial heating inside. Our reduced exposure to daylight can leave us looking dull & dry. For many, it can be a time of year when we are less active, eat more and experience exposure to a plethora of viral illnesses.

With this in mind, the winter can be the perfect time of the year to consider treatments targeted towards regenerating your skin. ‘Skin resurfacing’ sounds scary but it really just refers to treatments that speed up your skins’ own function of self-renewal. When we are children, we have beautiful bouncy luminous skin. At this point in our lives, new skin cells are produced every six weeks to replace old cells on the skin’s surface.

As we start to get older, this cycle begins to slow down. The cells become less efficient at turning over, resulting in surface skin lacking the radiance that was once apparent. This issue can actually be exacerbated by using rich moisturisers which will glue those dead cells to the surface of the skin and make it even harder for new cells to emerge. This effect is not just experienced by women but also by men. By resurfacing we are stimulating the skin to be more effective at what it does naturally.

At the milder end of the spectrum, LED Phototherapy is a treatment that simply involves relaxing under a canopy of light. This light delivers an energy source to the skin cells responsible for producing collagen & elastin, increasing their productivity and increasing the luminosity of the skin. This is suitable for all skin types and as you are also in a relaxed state also provides respite from the bustle of every day life. Medical microdermabrasion uses a fine spray of aluminium oxide crystals directed at the skin to remove dead dry skin cells on the surface. This treatment results in little or no downtime but provides  a great ‘results driven’ facial and is completed by a 20 minute session on the LED phototherapy lamp.

Chemical Peeling is another term that sends many people running to the hills holding on to their faces!. Chemical Peels come in many different forms from mild to deep. For many of us deep peels are unacceptable due to side effects and down time. But did you know that mild treatments like pH formula result in very little downtime? The process itself is very straightforward and simply involves a solution applied to your face. The type of solution used is matched to your skin type and the problems you experience. These treatments work best as a course because they are mild. Once again the goal here is to provide an accelerated exfoliation, a process that occurs naturally in the skin but may have become somewhat sluggish. This treatment may leave you with slight dryness and pinkness lasting a few days after the treatment.

The Perfect Peel™ has received a lot of attention since its launch and has just featured in the Daily Mail Ultimate Anti-Ageing Guide. It is a medium depth peel that will help you achieve glowing radiant skin. It is the only peel to have developed a formula utilizing the most powerful antioxidant as its main ingredient. Glutathione is widely considered to be THE antioxidant and is renowned for its effects on the skin. However, until now it has never been used as a peel ingredient. This treatment will result in some visible peeling and irritation but the results are incredible. If all plans fail during the winter time, try to exfoliate your skin two – three times / week. Try to avoid opting for richer & richer moisturisers and consider adding a daily supplement such as collagen shots to enable you to enter the summer in butterfly mode rather than caterpillar!
