If you’ve met me before or if you have read any of my blogs you will notice that I typically refer to the fact that the skin ages in a number of ways. Unfortunately for us, this complex organ has different functions and processes that will each slow down with age and each has visible effects.
The reason I repeat this fact over and over is because it is important!
I need to put this out there once and for all… The brutal truth is, that when it comes to managing our looks as we age, a bit of Botox OR a bit of filler is probably not going to cut it. And by “cut it” I mean how close you are to obtaining that desired look that you have in your mind’s eye.
Now I understand why you choose either dermal filler OR Botox and then run with it.
If you are ’Team Dermal Filler’ you have done your research and taken the plunge. You now know that this is a natural product, it not only gives volume but it lifts and attracts moisture too. Dermal filler is the perfect way to address the volume loss that predominantly affects the lower face and is simply a game changer in positively impacting your looks when your face has started slipping!
If you are solely ‘Team Botox’ again – I get it. The process is so quick, & the magical effect of Botox blows any ”miracle anti wrinkle cream” out of the water – it truly has the WOW factor.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO…
REMINDER: BOTH THE UPPER & LOWER PART OF THE FACE AGES.
To put it broadly – they age in different ways.
The upper face predominantly creases from the years of using the muscles that lie underneath the skin. Botox is the GOLD STANDARD used to soften the lines that are the direct result of muscle activity in the skin. It is mainly used in the upper part of the face (although there are some wonderful things you can achieve in the lower face too).
For some people, the idea of Botox conjures up a frozen expressionless face – but TRUST ME on this – you are wrong. Used correctly, Botox brings a ‘fresh factor’ to your skin, the like of which no cream or lotion can compare with. The main problem with these upper face wrinkles that form very gradually over time, in your upper face is the messages they can convey to the outside world. Those messages can include:

😡 I’m angry
☹️I’m miserable
😏 I’m unapproachable
The lower face has a primary issue of volume loss as we age. We lose volume from the mid-face and the fat pads in this area start the downward slide, creating nose-to-mouth lines, downturned mouth and the dreaded jowl formation. Again facial volume loss can communicate unintended messages:

😨 I’m unwell
😟 I’m miserable
Filler works not only by replacing lost volume but by triggering lift in the skin.
So in summary, if you are having only dermal filler OR Botox in your twenties – chances are you may be getting away with it.
If you are in your thirties, forties, fifties and above using dermal filler OR Botox alone is UNLIKELY going to be enough for you to achieve your potential.
WHAT YOU CAN DO…
In short, when you get to a certain age, your dermal filler treatment would look tonnes better if you started using a little Botox too and vice versa.
Having read all of the above, I can hear both teams shouting out in their head:
