Are frown lines normal?

Ever wondered if your lines are normal? It’s a really common thought. When it comes to our face and bodies, I think many of us wonder if certain aspects of the way we look is ‘normal’. I’m not suggesting you lie awake at night pondering this, but I often find myself in clinic in a discussion with someone asking, for example:

 ‘Are my frown lines normal?’

‘One of my nose to mouth lines is deeper than the other –  is that normal?’

‘I feel nervous – is that normal?’

When I worked general practice I was often asked by women attending for smear tests, ‘are my bits normal?’

Whether or not we admit it we want to feel that we are ‘NORMAL’.

You are normal, take it from me

Your frown lines are normal

Your volume loss is normal

Your bits are normal

Your breasts are normal

Your facial hair is normal

Your wrinkles are normal

We all come in different shapes and sizes. We all grow and develop in different ways and at different rates. We all age in different ways too. We all have things we like or don’t like about the way we look.

LPA is an award-winning nurse-led clinic. Our philosophy is to help you age in a way that you feel confident and comfortable in yourself. We’re on a mission to win your trust from the off, by making your visit relaxed and easy and ultimately sending you on your way with a natural revitalised and more attractive version of you, so that you’re ready to conquer your world!

We are based in EC1 in the bustle of the city. We are registered with Save Face, the UK aesthetics regulatory body.

Frown lines are indeed the most normal thing in the world. They occur because the skin is covering a strong set of muscles in that area. This set of muscles is responsible for pulling the skin downwards and inwards between the brows. For some people this movement is something they do all the time without realising it. I often see people wandering around the streets of London with a frown fixed on their face & I do have to stop myself from saying – ‘Hey you – stop frowning!!!’  (I could get myself in some serious trouble in London I suspect for some of the impulsive reactions I want to share with strangers!!) For some, they may only frown when confused or cross and this muscle is less used. The more you use this set of muscles, the deeper the frown lines will get. It’s as simple as that.

The trouble with frowning and the reason people start to ask ‘are frown lines normal?’ is that frowning gives the impression that you are miserable when you are not.

Sometimes, people who frown a lot will feel that they suffer with headaches or tension in across the forehead, so it can also result in a negative physical feeling.

So, what do you need to do about your frown lines? If they don’t bother you then you can stop right here & do nothing at all. You can try to stop yourself from frowning as much by having more awareness of your facial expressions but that can be easier said than done.

If you are bothered and you live or work in London, you can book an appointment to see me or one of my wonderful colleagues Emma or Josie. My clinic is based in between London underground stations Barbican and Old Street. We will be able to advise the best course of action. Most likely this recommendation would be wrinkle reduction injections. This sounds much more scary than it is. A series of tiny painless injections into the areas you want to treat. Anti wrinkle injections are the best treatment for wrinkles and lines that appear because of the muscles underneath the skin. Without question this is ‘gold standard’ treatment. Wrinkle reduction injections will help to stop frown lines from getting deeper & they may help to soften any lines you already have. For those who have deeper lines, we may suggest combining a wrinkle reduction & filler treatment together for the best outcome. If you feel that wrinkle injections are not for you then we can figure out something that you find more acceptable.

So the question is not ‘are my frown lines normal?’ but ‘am I happy with my frown lines as they are?’
